Discover the Artist Who Painted the Faces of Old Saratoga Springs: Free Community Event October 21
The Saratoga Springs History Museum invites the community to an evening of art, history, and storytelling at the historic Canfield Casino.
What did the people of Saratoga Springs look like nearly two centuries ago? Who were the families, community figures, and personalities who helped shape the city we know today?
Long before photographs became commonplace, portrait artists helped preserve the faces of generations past. Among those artists was Nelson Cook, a prolific 19th-century painter whose remarkable portraits offer a fascinating glimpse into the people and personalities of historic Saratoga Springs.
On Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at 7:00 PM, the Saratoga Springs History Museum invites residents and visitors to discover Cook's life, work, and artistic legacy during a special presentation at the historic Canfield Casino.
The event is completely FREE and open to the community, with donations welcome.
The Artist Behind the Faces of Old Saratoga
During the mid-19th century, Saratoga Springs was home to a growing community of influential families, entrepreneurs, and individuals whose stories would become part of the city's history.
Nelson Cook was among the artists who captured these individuals on canvas, creating portraits that would preserve their likenesses for generations to come.
His subjects included Rockwell Putnam, son of Gideon Putnam, one of Saratoga Springs' most important early figures, along with members of the prominent Van Deusen and Walworth families.
Today, these paintings offer more than an artistic record. They provide a visual connection to the people who lived in Saratoga Springs during an important period in its development.
Through Cook's portraits, we can look back at the individuals whose lives and stories form part of the community's rich historical heritage.
A Remarkable Artistic Legacy Preserved in Saratoga Springs
Although Cook worked during the 19th century, his artistic legacy continues to be recognized and preserved today.
His paintings can be found in museums and private collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
Closer to home, the Saratoga Springs History Museum holds more than 20 works by Nelson Cook in its own collection, preserving an important connection between the artist and the community where he worked.
These works represent more than beautiful examples of historical portraiture. They are pieces of Saratoga Springs' story, capturing faces and personalities that might otherwise be known only through written records.
Preserving collections like these is an important part of the Museum's mission, ensuring that future generations have the opportunity to explore and understand the people who came before them.
An Evening of Art, Stories, and Saratoga History
As part of the Museum's Annual Meeting and Program, Museum Executive Director James Parillo will present A Portrait of Nelson Cook: A Saratoga Springs Artist.
During the presentation, Parillo will explore Cook's life, artistic career, personal struggles, and the legacy he left behind.
Guests will also have the opportunity to discover a selection of Cook's works from the Museum's collection as Parillo shares insights into the artist and the Saratogians he painted.
The presentation will follow a brief Annual Meeting of the Historical Society.
