Some of Saratoga Springs' most treasured landmarks—from its famous mineral springs and Saratoga Spa State Park to Yaddo and Lake George—might look very different today if not for the quiet determination of one remarkable man.
On June 18, 2026, the Saratoga Springs History Museum welcomed author and historian Glenn Underwood for an engaging presentation on his acclaimed book, Discovering George Foster Peabody. The evening offered guests an opportunity to discover the life and legacy of one of the region's most influential, yet often overlooked, figures.
Through years of meticulous research, personal correspondence, rare photographs, and archival documents, Underwood brought to life the extraordinary story of George Foster Peabody—a banker, philanthropist, conservationist, and reformer whose vision helped preserve many of the places that continue to define Saratoga Springs today.
Throughout the evening, Underwood guided attendees through Peabody's remarkable journey—from a young man with little formal education to becoming one of America's most respected financiers and civic leaders. Rather than focusing solely on his professional success, the lecture revealed the values that shaped his life: public service, conservation, education, and the belief that prosperity should benefit entire communities.
