Tracks of Ambition: Thomas C. Durant and the Adirondack Railway

  • 1 E. Congress Street Saratoga Springs, NY, 12866 United States (map)

Join us on Thursday, July 30 at 6:30 pm for an engaging evening of regional history as railroad historian and author Richard Chait explores the powerful legacy of Thomas C. Durant and the rise of the Adirondack Railway.

Durant was one of the most influential—and controversial—figures of America’s 19th-century railroad boom. His efforts to extend rail lines into upstate New York helped transform Saratoga Springs into a thriving destination, connecting the region to tourism, industry, and economic growth, while also raising lasting questions about land use, speculation, and power.

Drawing from his book Rails in and Around Saratoga Springs, Chait brings this pivotal story to life through rich historical detail, compelling visuals, and expert insight. The program examines how the Adirondack Railway reshaped local communities, commerce, and the natural landscape, leaving an enduring mark on the region’s development.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, rail fan, or curious Saratoga local, this talk offers a fascinating look at the tracks that helped carry Saratoga into the modern age.
