Annual Meeting & Program: A Portrait of Nelson Cook: A Saratoga Springs Artist

  • 1 E. Congress Street Saratoga Springs, NY, 12866 United States (map)

Step into the world of 19th-century Saratoga Springs and discover the life, work, and remarkable portraits of an artist who captured some of the community’s most prominent figures.

Join the Saratoga Springs History Museum on Wednesday, October 21 at 7:00 PM at the historic Canfield Casino for the Annual Meeting of the Historical Society, followed by a special presentation, A Portrait of Nelson Cook: A Saratoga Springs Artist, presented by Museum Executive Director James Parillo.

Following a brief business meeting, the evening will turn its attention to Nelson Cook, a prolific and talented portrait artist whose work provides a fascinating glimpse into the people and personalities of mid-19th-century Saratoga Springs.

Cook painted many prominent Saratogians, including Rockwell Putnam, son of Saratoga Springs founder Gideon Putnam, along with members of the Van Deusen and Walworth families and many others. Through his portraits, Cook left behind more than likenesses—his paintings offer a visual connection to the individuals and families who were part of Saratoga Springs during a transformative period in its history.

Today, Cook’s work can be found in museums and private collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Here in Saratoga Springs, the History Museum preserves an especially significant collection of his work, with more than 20 Nelson Cook pieces in the Museum’s collection.

During this special program, James Parillo will bring Cook’s story to life, exploring his career, his personal and professional struggles, and the legacy he left behind. Guests will also have the opportunity to discover a selection of Cook’s works from the Museum collection as James shares the stories behind the artist and his subjects.

It is an evening that brings together art, local history, and the people of old Saratoga Springs, offering a closer look at an artist whose portraits continue to preserve the faces of the city’s past nearly two centuries later.

Whether you are a longtime Museum member, an art enthusiast, or simply curious about Saratoga Springs history, we invite you to join us for this special evening inside the Canfield Casino.
